The Origins
Sea Collective is the culmination of a lifework. From the time she was six, Taylor knew she would embark on a lifelong journey to protect the oceans. It wasn’t until she met the Bajau freedivers of the Sulu Sea that she realized that one of the most powerful ways to safeguard the ocean is to work with small-scale fishermen. Since meeting the Bajau and learning how dynamite fishing can transform into conservation through community action, Taylor has worked with fishing communities in Belize, the Philippines, Kenya and Indonesia to structure equitable marine conservation initiatives. Sea Collective is an extension of her work at the intersection of social justice and environmental resilience.
Taylor holds a master’s degree in marine ecology and specializes in social-ecological systems in tropical small-scale fisheries. She is a SCUBA instructor, freediver and surfer.
The Sea Collective Oddesey
Sea Collective, born from the ashes of conventional marine conservation practices, embarks on a novel and ambitious journey to sail the world's tropical coastlines. Drawing inspiration from Enric Sala's "Megatransect" concept, our mission is to create a comprehensive socio-ecological dataset by integrating community perspectives and scientific data. Our unique approach aligns with the vision of great conservation leaders, but with a key distinction—we are conducting our Megatransect aboard sailboats. As we sail the world’s coastal oceans, we aim to leave a smaller carbon footprint than conventional research expeditions. Also, we’re pretty grassroots, so we use the power of of the wind and cruising vessels to push us towards sustainable seas!
